In a season that has included two tournament titles, six top-three finishes and trips to Hawaii, Kansas, Colorado and Oregon, the last stop for the Grand Canyon men's golf team lands it in its home state of Arizona for the WAC Championship in Payson, where the Lopes will defend their crown about an hour and 45 minutes northeast of campus.
The Golf Club at Chaparral Pines is the site of the three-day WAC Championship, beginning Friday morning and concluding Sunday afternoon. The 7,019-yard course is a par 72 with a slope of 139.
GCU enters the WAC Championship ranked No. 68 in the Clippd rankings with a record of 123-41-3. The entire WAC field includes No. 159 Utah Valley, No. 161 California Baptist, No. 167 UT Rio Grande Valley, No. 172 Seattle U, No. 186 Abilene Christian, No. 197 Tarleton State, No. 213 Utah Tech, No. 215 Stephen F. Austin and No. 258 Southern Utah.
The title defense's starting five will include four seniors in
Nicky Kling,
Tommaso Zorzetto,
Matthew Pennington and
Craig Passmore. Freshman
Gavin O'Neill rounds out the five, while junior
Josh McCabe will be available as an alternate. Kling and Zorzetto were a part of the first WAC Championship title team last season.
The Lopes will tee off first at 9 a.m. Friday. The winning team of this WAC Championship will represent the conference at an NCAA regional.
