GOODYEAR, Ariz. – After leading the 17-team Bobcat Desert Classic field Monday, Grand Canyon trailed Seattle U by one stroke entering Wednesday's final round and needed more of the third-round magic that it has showcased all season to claim another team title.
With the advantage of playing 40 minutes from campus in mid-80-degree, sunny weather, the Lopes found their magic early in the final round and never looked back. GCU carded the field's only below-par round Wednesday to claim the tournament title.
GCU shot 11-under over the course of three days, defeating second-place Seattle U by three strokes and the trio of third-place teams Wyoming, California Baptist and Idaho by 19 strokes.
The team victory extends a Division I-era program record for wins in a season, moving the total to five tourney titles with three this spring. In 10 regular-season events, GCU has posted eight top-three finishes and nine top-five showings. It's the second victory at an Arizona course this season after winning the BGSU Women's Intercollegiate in Litchfield Park to open the spring campaign. It now ends the regular season with a team title in its home state and heads two hours northeast to Payson, Arizona, for the WAC Championship on April 19-21.
Four GCU golfers finished in the top 15 Wednesday, led by senior
Constanza Guerrero in second place at 8 under par with rounds of 70, 68 and 70. Guerrero was even through 12 holes Wednesday, and much like Tuesday's second round, found a late spark with birdies on holes 13 and 17 to tally five for her round. Guerrero registered 13 birdies and an eagle for the tournament, with her third-round score of 70 tied for second lowest on the day.
Lopes junior
Leighton Shosted tied for fifth at 2 under, shooting even par Wednesday. Shosted wiped away three front-nine bogeys with three birdies on the back nine and finished the tournament with 11 birdies. GCU sophomore
Ryan Flynn tied Guerrero for lowest score Wednesday, shooting 2 under to tie for 10th overall at 1 under par. Flynn had six birdies Wednesday, including a stretch of five birdies over six holes.
GCU senior
Carly Strole tied for 13th at even par, registering three birdies while classmate
Becca Tschetter tied for 45th at 8 over. Individual entry
Lena Tremouille, a freshman, tied for 38th at 7 over in her second career collegiate tournament.
The WAC Championship is next for the Lopes, who head into Payson with a team record of 140-19 this season. The three-day championship begins the morning of April 19 at the Chaparral Pines Golf Club.
