Grand Canyon returns to the state of Texas for the third time in the month of March. The Lopes open a three-game set with UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (Phoenix time).

THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- WAC WINNERS: The Lopes visit UTRGV for the second straight season, beating the Vaqueros twice with a third game rained out. GCU also defeated the Vaqueros in the WAC Tournament in Mesa. The Lopes have won 18 of their last 19 WAC games and have won seven consecutive conference series.
 - HITS, HITS, HITS: GCU leads the WAC with a .304 batting average. Six everyday starters are hitting over .300: Cade Verdusco, Eddy Pelc, Eli Paton, Dustin Crenshaw, Tyler Wilson and Beau Ankeney.
 - CLEAN DEFENSE: GCU has committed only two errors in its last seven games. The Lopes boast one of the nation's top-20 fielding percentages (.981). GCU is 11-2 in games where it does not make an error.

SCOUTING
It's an interesting week at UT Rio Grande Valley, where the Vaqueros are reportedly exiting the WAC after this academic year as confirmed by the conference office. UTRGV joined the WAC the same year that the Lopes did (2013-14).
The Vaqueros have opened 2024 with a home-heavy schedule that has featured largely schools from the northern half of the United States visiting Edinburg. UTRGV has defeated Rhode Island (two of three), Milwaukee (three of three) and Oakland (two of three). UTRGV dropped two of three to Austin Peay and opened WAC play by losing two of three at Seattle U. The Vaqueros' strength of schedule ranks 293rd out of 305 Division I programs.
UTRGV has pitched well to begin the season under seventh-year head coach Derek Matlock who was the pitching coach at West Virginia prior to accepting the UTRGV job. All three scheduled starting pitchers have a sub-3.00 ERA and the team has a 3.85 ERA that ranks 17th nationally.
