TUCSON, Ariz. - The Grand Canyon track and field team begun their outdoor season Saturday at the Spring Break Fiesta hosted by Arizona.
"I thought we had a fairly good start to our outdoor season, especially since it was spring break this week and the weather for the meet was a little chilly for us desert dwellers," GCU head coach
Tom Flood said.
The Lopes women are coming off of winning the WAC indoor Championships and looked to keep the momentum going.
"It's always nice to start off your season with a school record, as both
Sophia Saldutto (javelin) and
Taryn Burkett (triple jump) did."
Saldutto threw for a mark of 44.20 meters while Burkett jumped a mark of 12.78 meters.
"I thought that
Dawnielle Lewis had a good day and that
Daviciea McCartney,
Ben Stratman and
Germain Lemaitre had good season openers in their respective events," Flood said.
Lewis went 11.84 seconds in the 100 dash, while McCartney went 14.19 second in the men's 110 hurdles.
Stratman ran the 400 in his outdoor opener in a time of 47.11 seconds. Lemaitre ran a 1:50.94 800m in his outdoor debut with the Lopes to claim first.
"It was also fun to watch our 'B' 4x100 meter relay team, comprised of four true freshman (
Adam Raska,
Josiah Adams,
Aaron Johnson and
Dylan Poteat), run 40.12, which is the leading time in the conference," Flood said.
This came after the usual 4x100 team ran 39.83 but was disqualified for a lane violation.
"We will have a quick turnaround this week and will look to get even better next weekend again in Tucson," Flood said.
GCU will return to compete in the annual Willie Williams Classic Friday and Saturday.
