The Grand Canyon women's tennis team defended home court with a 4-0 shutout win over Northern Arizona on Thursday at GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes (12-2) took control early, winning the doubles point and a pair of straight-set singles matches. Senior
Santa Strombacha clinched the win for the Lopes with a 6-1, 6-1 win at Court 2.
The match began with GCU taking the doubles point with wins at the top two courts. Junior
Valentina Del Marco and freshman
Valeriia Krokhotina were perfect in their 6-0 win at Court 2. Meanwhile, at the No. 1 court, graduate
Natasha Puehse and Strombacha clinched the point with a 6-1 win. At court 3, GCU freshmen duo
Iva Sepa and
Elizaveta Morozova were leading 4-2 when their match was left unfinished.
With the 1-0 dual match lead secured, the Lopes pressed their advantage over the Lumberjacks (3-7) by winning the first set on four of the six courts. At court 4, it was Sepa who provided the first singles win for the Lopes by defeating NAU's Dolavee Tumthong 6-1, 6-3. On the next court, fellow GCU freshman Krokohotina cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at Court 5.
With GCU ahead 3-0, it was Strombacha who clinched the dual-match win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at Court 2. With the win, the GCU senior is tied for the team lead with an 11-0 singles record.
Puehse, Morozova and GCU sophomore
Dania Deaifi all had their matches left unfinished in the second set.
The Lopes will open conference play next weekend at Utah Tech and Seattle U on March 22 and 24, respectively.
