ST. GEORGE, Utah — Entering a pivotal week of conference play against two top-four teams in the WAC standings, Grand Canyon began its road trip Thursday night with the second-most points it has scored this season while showcasing its nationally touted defense in an 88-41 victory at Utah Tech.

Tiarra Brown (10). San Antonio had a career day from beyond the 3-point arc, knocking down five 3s while adding two assists, two steals and five rebounds.
The WAC leader in offensive rebounds, Lane added four more to her tally with six rebounds in total. Brown was tenacious on the defensive end, totaling a game-high four steals of GCU's 14. The defense forced 25 turnovers, the second most on the season and third time in the last four games with 20-plus forced turnovers.
GCU (21-4, 13-1 WAC) took a 1 1/2-game lead on California Baptist, which lost Thursday evening. The Lopes head next to CBU for a head-to-head matchup Saturday afternoon.
GCU's offense began Thursday night on a 10-2 run to force a Utah Tech timeout. It shot 52% in the opening quarter and outrebounded the Trailblazers 12-4 to lead 20-12 after 10 minutes. San Antonio hit a pair of 3s to keep the offense in rhythm in the second quarter, aiding the Lopes to a 41-23 halftime lead.
After an opening jumper by Utah Tech, the Lopes went on a 12-0 run in the third, again with back-to-back 3-pointers from San Antonio as she surpassed her career best of three in a game.
GCU's best offensive quarter came in the fourth, with seven Lopes scoring 28 points — two points shy of its season best for a quarter in WAC play. While the offense hit on all cylinders, the defense held Utah Tech to five points for the quarter and 18 for the second half.
The Lopes won the rebounding battle 39-23 and shot 57% from the floor, its second-highest clip this season and fourth time shooting above 50% in WAC play this season.
GCU rounds out its road trip with an afternoon contest at California Baptist ion Saturday at 2 p.m. (Phoenix time).
