The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team opens Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play this weekend at No. 2 BYU. The second-ranked Lopes will face the Cougars in Smith Fieldhouse for the first time since 2022.
Both matches will be streamed live on BYUtv.
3 THINGS TO KNOW
- ONLY UNBEATEN: The Lopes enter this weekend as the only undefeated team in Division I men's volleyball. The Lopes sit at 9-0 and No. 2 in the most recent polls, earning five first place votes and slotting just behind Long Beach State who is 10-1. The Lopes have yet to play in a five-set match holding a 6-0 mark in three-set matches and a 3-0 record in four-set matches.
- WINNING STREAK: The Lopes have had the edge against BYU recently entering this weekend with four-straight wins against the Cougars. BYU still holds an 8-6 advantage in the all-time season series but the Lopes have won four straight dating back to 2022. All matches between the two teams have been close with two of the last four going the distance to five sets.
- RETURNINGÂ HOME: After facing the Cougars the Lopes will finally return home after three straight roadtrips. GCU will face USC on Feb. 23 and 24 in their first home matches since facing Lindenwood back on Jan. 14. The Lopes will also welcome Stanford to Global Credit Union Arena on March 1 and 3.
SCOUTING
BYU began the year tied for third in the preseason coaches poll with GCU and have since rattled off a 9-3 record with six wins coming at Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars boast seven ranked wins and enter this weekend in the middle of a 10-match homestand. Junior Luke Benson and sophomore Trent Moser each have over 100 kills so far this season while senior middle blocker Gavin Julien leads the team with 33 blocks.
