LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. — In its first tournament of the spring season, Grand Canyon picked up where it left off in the fall with its name at the top of the leaderboard through two Tuesday rounds of the BGSU Women's Intercollegiate at Wigwam Golf Club.
The 6,058, par-71 course played tough for all 14 teams in the field with GCU taking the lead at 25 over par. The Lopes hold a six-stroke lead over second-place Idaho and an 11-stroke advantage over third-place Ball State entering Wednesday's final round.
GCU junior
Leighton Shosted notched five birdies and an eagle in her 36 holes played Tuesday,making her one of eight players to record an eagle along with sophomore teammate
Amelia Curtis. Shosted shot 2 over in back-to-back rounds and sits in fourth place at 4 over par. She ended her final 10 holes with three birdies and six pars to help guide the Lopes at the top of the standings.
Curtis, playing in her first event of the 2023-24 season, caught fire in her first NCAA round with three birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine and was the overall leader midway through the first round. She shot 2 over in the first round and 6 over in the second and is tied for 11th at 8 over. Curtis eagled the par-5 18th hole, while Shosted had her eagle on the par-5 third hole.
Lopes sophomore
Ryan Flynn bounced back from a 5-over first round with a 1-over second round to put herself well in contention of the individual medal at 6 over par. Flynn had three birdies and five pars from holes 10 to 18 in the second round and enters Wednesday in a tie for sixth place.
Senior teammate
Constanza Guerrero is tied with Curtis at 8 over and tallied six birdies on the day. Guerrero was 4 over after the first four holes Tuesday but wiped away the early bogeys with four birdies, nine pars and only one bogey over her final 14 holes in the first round. Senior
Becca Tschetter had three birdies on the afternoon and is tied for 55th overall.
Two Lopes also competed as individuals in their GCU debuts. Freshman
Brenna Preap tied Guerrero for most birdies on the day (six) and is tied for 29th. Classmate
Lena Tremouille had two birdies and 14 pars in the second round to tie for 38th.
GCU's par-4 scoring was the best among the field, shooting 18 over on such holes. Its 24 birdies are third most with its 100 pars tied for most with Northern Illinois.
The Lopes close out the BGSU Women's Intercollegiate on Wednesday and then will take a week off before returning to action on its Phoenix home course Feb. 27-28 for the GCU Invitational.
