Magician-themed performance entertains thousands at Lopes hoop event
Grand Canyon's annual Midnight Madness, held to tip off the men's and women's basketball seasons, was especially significant this year as it marked the university's final season in the WAC.Â
The theme was "Lopes Vegas," and the event transformed GCU Arena into a Vegas-style celebration. The night's goal was to paint Vegas purple with performances from GCU Cheerleaders, Dancers, Drumline and the Thundering Heard Pep Band.
Midnight Madness has long been a tradition to rally school spirit and introduce the basketball teams to the Havocs and the GCU community. This year's event featured a standout performance by the GCU Dance Team, whose magician-themed routine mesmerized the crowd with disappearing acts, light tricks and wand choreography.Â
The GCU Dance Team's captains choreographed a routine that began with several GCU dancers on the floor before they reappeared in the audience, creating an illusion that the crowd enjoyed. When the lights went dark and the dancers' magic lights appeared, cheers erupted from the audience. Thunder joined the fun and appeared in the final 30 seconds of the routine, causing the crowd to light up with excitement.
"Being able to choreograph the dance for Midnight Madness was so fulfilling," senior and fourth-year member, Amanda Dobbins said. "It was amazing to see our vision come to life with the choreography, music, lights and all of my awesome teammates. The audience truly enjoyed our routine and made the moment the moment so surreal."
The magic-filled routine engaged the audience, drawing enthusiastic responses from the Havocs, who were on their feet throughout the show. The combination of lights, music and choreography created a thrilling visual experience that complemented the night's Vegas atmosphere.
