Grand Canyon beach volleyball is adding former student-athlete
Anaya Evans to the staff as an assistant coach.
Evans returns to the GCU program that she helped elevate to national rankings and NCAA tournament appearances to coach after playing for the Lopes for five seasons.
The Croyde, England, native is the GCU beach volleyball all-time wins record holder (84). Evans has played internationally for junior and senior English teams.
"GCU beach volleyball is incredibly excited and grateful to welcome
Anaya Evans to the staff," head coach
Abra Rummel said. "Adding a player as experienced and successful domestically and internationally to our staff, will continue to advance our program."
To close her time as a student-athlete, Evans earned a 2023 American Volleyball Coaches Association's Top Flight honor. The Top Flight program recognizes beach pairs that compete in at least 15 matches together at a specific flight and win at least 75% of their matches.
Â
Evans came to Phoenix in 2019, when as a freshman she earned ranked wins against the likes of No. 4Â LSU, No. 6 Hawaii and No. 7 Cal Poly (twice). The 2022 junior campaign consisted of 33 matches on Court 1. In her senior season this year, Evans finished with a 26-6 record. Anaya comes in as a coach who also has NCAA tournament experience. As an athlete, she competed against Georgia State and Stanford in NCAA tournament action. Â
"I am confident Anaya will help the Lopes be successful on the national stage," Rummel said. Â
The Lopes' new-look coaching staff now includes Rummel at the helm as head coach, with
Keone Coronado and Evans as assistants.
