With a successful opening homestand in the rearview mirror, the No. 5 Grand Canyon men's volleyball team will hit the road for the next six matches, starting at No. 18 UC San Diego on Friday. It will be the second meeting of the season afer the Lopes defeated the Tritons on Jan. 6
Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.
3 THINGS TO KNOW
- REMATCH: The Lopes and Tritons will face off for the second time this season on Friday after previously meeting on Jan. 6 in the Asics Invitational. The Lopes won 3-0, hitting .324 with a balanced offensive attack that had three players record at least seven kills. Senior outside hitter Jackson Hickman led the Lopes with 11 kills on .444 hitting.
- BLOCK PARTY: The GCU defense came to play against Lindenwood in a 3-0 win on Sunday, recording 6.5 blocks. Most of those blocks came during a 10-1 run for the Lopes that was part of a 25-19, second-set win. GCU recorded 5.5 blocks in the set and sophomore middle blocker Cameron Thorne and senior outside hitter Camden Gianni led the Lopes with three blocks each.
- EAST COAST SWING: The longest road trip will continue for the Lopes, who head to the East Coast at the end of the month. GCU will face Merrimack on Jan. 31Â and then take on Harvard and Daeman in the Harvard Invitational from Feb. 2-3.
SCOUTING
UC San Diego has had a challenging start to the season, facing its sixth ranked opponent when it plays GCU on Friday. The Tritons began the season with a pair of wins over No. 20 George Mason and NJIT at the Asics Invitational to enter the national polls for the first time. The Tritons took No. 5 Ohio State to five sets on the road in a close loss on Jan. 13 before losing to No. 16 Princeton at home in straight sets on Jan. 16. Junior opposite Anthony Cherfan leads the team with 67 kills and has double-digit kills in four matches this season.
WHAT'S NEXT?
- GCU will head to Massachusetts for three matches against Merrimack, Harvard and Daeman from Jan. 31-Feb. 3.
