Grand Canyon's class of newcomers for the 2024 season was ranked among the nation's top 50 by
Collegiate Baseball.
Second-year Lopes head coach
Gregg Wallis assembled a class of newcomers that includes 15 freshmen, five junior-college transfers and three transfers from four-year schools.
GCU continues a tradition of receiving national recognition for its recruiting classes. In 2016, the class was ranked in the top 40 by
Baseball America. In 2020, GCU placed No. 30 by
Collegiate Baseball. In 2021,
Baseball America returned to name GCU's class one of the top 10 mid-major classes. In 2022,
Prep Baseball Report labeled the Lopes' class as one of 10 "Power Major" classes.
The Lopes went strong on pitching to garner the ranking including:
- RHP Connor Mattison (freshman from Canyon View High School; Goodyear, Ariz.) - a 5A All-State first teamer
- RHP Hunter Watkins (freshman from Grace Brethren High School; Simi Valley, Calif.) - All-County Pitcher of the Year from the same high school as Lopes alum and Twins minor leaguer Pierson Ohl
- LHP Ben Smith (freshman from Basic High School; Henderson, Nev.)
- LHP David Case (junior from El Camino College and Oregon State) - All-South Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year
Highlights of the class from position players include:
- OF Eddy Pelc (junior from Santa Ana College)
- 3B Christian Perez (sophomore from New Mexico State) - 2023 All-WAC second-team selection
- C Brady Francisco (freshman from Thousand Oaks High School; Thousand Oaks, Calif.)
- SS Cooper Neville (freshman from Mountain Ridge High School; Glendale, Ariz.) - 6A All-State first-team pick, Region Player of the Year
The remainder of the class includes:
- Freshmen: Austin Matranga, Collin Adams, Cannon Peery, Garrett Ahern, Marcus Galvan, Austin Kalsek, Troy Sanders, Ty Coombs, Billy Scaldeferri, JT Kelenic.
- Junior-college transfers: Barrett Skaugrud (Yavapai), Michael Diaz (South Mountain), Blake Avila (Central Arizona).
- Four-year transfers: Alton Gyselman (Hawaii), Brock Toney (Central Missouri).
GCU's class of newcomers will take the field in February 2024 as the Lopes look to defend their back-to-back-to-back WAC regular-season titles.
