FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Grand Canyon cross country is off to a strong start for the season after competing in its first race of the season Saturday.
The Lopes' summer work is showing early with many GCU runners improving off last season's times at the George Kyte Classic in Flagstaff.
"On both sides, we accomplished what we planned to do," Lopes head coach
Paul Limpf said. "We gave them a plan of set threshold times to run through certain points on the course and asked both teams to run in packs and work together."
The Lopes' top finisher on the men's side was sophomore
Jacob Pringle with junior
Alex Rafferty not far behind.
"Despite sitting two of our top guys today, who are training through for some upcoming meets, the team — top to bottom — looked great," Limpf said. "We had tons of improvements from last year despite using the majority of the race as a workout."
Pringle improved over a minute from last year's time with Rafferty also improving his time. Freshmen
Tristen Coyle and
Beckham Clements showed that the future is bright. Sophomore
Lance Harris, senior
Emmanuel Corral and sophomore
Jonah Archer closed out the top seven and all ran times that would have been in the top five for the Lopes last season.
"Much like the men, there were massive improvements all around," Limpf said regarding the women's team. "They definitely made the paces given to them look easy and were still able to run very well."
Junior
Abby Scherer (16 minutes 13.4 seconds) led the race for the women with sophomore
Hana Hall (16:25.2) following closely.
"We are all very excited about Hana, who has unfortunately dealt with some injuries the past year, but her perseverance was absolutely inspiring for our entire team today when she crossed as our second runner," Limpf said.
Sophomore
Halle Jenkins had a great race, finishing with a time of 16:29.8. Sophomores
Kaitlyn Kaye and
Anna Skoog, junior
Gretchen Kuffel and senior
Niki Hemmerlin were all right with the top three.
"That type of pack running will play a big role later in the season," Limpf said.
