Grand Canyon assistant coach Jack Wilson is stepping away from his role on the Lopes staff to pursue other opportunities in baseball.
In his season with the Lopes, Wilson was the hitting and infield coach on head coach
Gregg Wallis' staff. GCU went on a tear in the final weeks of the season to win its third consecutive WAC regular-season title.
"I cherished my time at GCU and with the GCU baseball program and am grateful for the opportunity," Wilson said. "It was a privilege to be able to form lifelong relationships with Lopes student-athletes."
Wallis is beginning an immediate national search for the next member of his GCU coaching staff.
Wilson has a long history of coaching roles with USA Baseball, collegiate summer baseball and in the high school ranks. For the last three summers, he has been a member of the coaching staff for USA's 18U National Team. Last summer, he coached with USA Baseball as the 18U National Team third-base coach, where the team grabbed a gold medal in the Baseball World Cup in Florida. He also served as a roving instructor for the 16U/17U National Team Development Program. Wilson also served as a head coach in 2019 for USA Baseball Trials and the National Team Development Program.
Additionally, Wilson has coached at his alma mater, Thousand Oaks High School, and in the Northwoods League of summer collegiate baseball.
"The baseball wisdom and experience that Coach Wilson was able to impart on our student-athletes was beneficial to our program in another championship season," Wallis said. "We thank Coach for his time in the GCU baseball program."
The program's summer continues with the MLB Draft set for July 9-11. The Lopes have three highly ranked draft prospects in shortstop
Jacob Wilson, outfielder
Homer Bush Jr. and left-handed pitcher
Zach Thornton.
