Grand Canyon junior pitcher
Carter Young was named the WAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday for the first time in his career.
Young was instrumental in leading the Lopes to their third consecutive WAC regular-season title on the regular season's final day. The righty tossed seven innings of one-run baseball against California Baptist, scattering five hits and adding a strikeout.
"It feels amazing," Young said of helping his team to a championship. "This team has worked incredibly hard. We had a bit of a rough patch in the middle but the team just stayed together. I mean, it brought us closer. That's ultimately what won us the rest of the year."
Saturday's trophy-clinching victory was the culmination of a late-year uptick by the former Freshman All-American. Young has won three consecutive starts and features a 4.54 earned-run average in his last seven starts. May has been even better to Young who has a 2.08 ERA in two starts after skipping a start last weekend due to a rainout.
"C.Y. has been amazing," GCU teammate
Jacob Wilson said. "He's gone out the second half of the year and he's really pounded the zone. He's gotten outs. He's had multiple quality starts in a row. To be behind that guy, it's pretty special to see how much of a competitor he is. Playing defense for these guys, it's pretty special when you know you don't have to do too much. He did a great job today like he's done the last few weeks."
Young claimed GCU's fifth WAC Pitcher of the Week honor of the season, joining sophomore
Daniel Avitia and junior
Zach Thornton each with one. The most GCU had previously claimed in a single season was three WAC Pitcher of the Week honors. Young made it back-to-back weeks for a GCU pitcher
after Avitia won the award last week.
Monday's announcement of WAC weekly honors concluded the award series for the season. In addition to GCU's five pitchers to win weekly honors, GCU also grabbed the WAC Hitter of the Week on four occasions.
