Grand Canyon sophomore pitcher
Daniel Avitia picked up his third career WAC Pitcher of the Week award on Monday and his second of the season.
Avitia picked up his seventh win of the season in the Lopes' win at UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday. The right-hander tossed six innings and allowed only one earned run.
Avitia issued three free passes to open the game, loading up the bases with no outs. He bounced back quickly, however, striking out the next three batters in order to keep the Vaqueros scoreless in the first and set the tone for the rest of his outing.
"It didn't start pretty, but Danny took a step forward when he hit adversity," Wallis said on Friday. "That's what we've been talking about ever since the midseason. It's taking a step forward and expecting good things to happen when we hit adversity. And that's exactly what Danny did. Three free passes, which is uncharacteristic of him, but he takes a step forward and goes strikeout, strikeout, strikeout. We roll from there."
Avitia was named WAC Pitcher of the Week for the second time in the last month. He won the award on April 17 after a career-high eight-inning outing in a win at Abilene Christian.
Combined with junior lefty
Zach Thornton's two WAC Pitcher of the Week honors this season, the Lopes have now won four WAC Pitcher of the Weeks this season.
GCU's regular season concludes with a three-game set against California Baptist at GCU Ballpark beginning on Thursday.
