HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Just taking the courts on Thursday was enough for Grand Canyon beach volleyball to make program history, debuting in a conference tournament as a first-year conference member. But the Lopes took it a step further, defeating No. 16 South Carolina 3-0 and posting the highest-ranked win in program history by upsetting national No. 2 and tournament top seed TCU 3-0.
The fourth-seeded Lopes advance to the semifinals of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Championships, where they will take on third-seeded LSU on Friday at 10:30 a.m. (Phoenix time).
The win over No. 2 TCU eclipses
a 3-2 win over No. 4 USC on March 1, 2020, as the highest-ranked opponent that GCU has defeated in program history.
GCU raced to wins in straight sets on Courts 2 and 3 at the John Hunt Sand Volleyball Complex. Junior
Allanis Navas and sophomore
Samaya Morin won 21-15, 21-17 on Court 2, and graduate
Cami Sanchez and senior
Anaya Evans won 21-15, 21-15 on Court 3.
With the Lopes needing to claim just one more court to pull off the upset, Courts 1 and 4 were moving to third sets after TCU took the opening sets and both GCU pairs responded with second-set wins.
The drama was ramping up on Court 5, however, where sophomore
Jessica Drake and graduate
Dana Roskic won the first set 25-23 and were battling in the second. The duo fought off a number of set points, trailing 20-18, to win in extra points 23-21 and clinch the match for the Lopes.
TCU had leads of three or more points in the third sets on Courts 1 and 4, making Drake's and Roskic's win on Court 5 critical. Lopes teammates and staff stormed the sand on Court 5 following the match-clinching victory.
The win puts the Lopes halfway to the four victories they need to win the CCSA Championships and clinch an automatic bid to their second straight NCAA tournament. It also helped bolster a comfortable at-large tournament resume for GCU, the nation's No. 7 team, seeking admission into the 16-team NCAA field.
The morning got started with the tournament's opening match between the fourth-seeded Lopes and fifth-seeded Gamecocks.
GCU won on straight sets on the first and second courts. The top pair of senior
Abbie Hughes and junior
Allison Hansen won 21-18, 21-18. On Court 2, Navas and Morin won 21-11, 21-17.
The match-clinching drama was again on Court 5 with Drake and Roskic winning 15-12 in the third set after splitting the first two sets.
