The Grand Canyon men's golf team stays in its home state this week as it travels just 25 miles southeast of campus to Chandler to partake in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Whirlwind Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.
Monday consists of 36 holes – the first and second rounds – while Tuesday is the final 18 holes. The tournament will be played on the Cattail course, a par 72 with a distance of 7,334 yards.
The Lopes are one of 22 teams competing this week and rank No. 112 via Golfstat. Among other teams competing include No. 5 Arizona State, No. 28 San Diego State, No. 34 TCU, No. 50 Missouri, No. 54 Long Beach State, No. 59 Kansas and No. 80 Iowa State. A total of four WAC teams are competing, with Utah Valley, UT Arlington and Southern Utah joining GCU in the field.
The 22-team field is GCU's largest since the 23-team GCU Invitational in March of 2022. The Lopes last competed in the Cowboy Classic in April of 2021, finishing ninth out of 23 schools at Whirlwind Golf Club.
The tournament is the fourth of the spring for the Lopes, who took 12th out of 21 teams in Hawaii and tied for second at its home course in Phoenix in the GCU Invitational on March 14. It recently placed 11th in the Duck Invitational last week in a tough field that included five teams in the national top 85. GCU's last regular-season tournament will be the El Macero (Calif.) Classic on April 14-16 before the WAC Championship on April 28-30 in Boulder City, Nevada.
