LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a 7-0 conference win at New Mexico State on Sunday.
The Lopes (12-9, 6-3 WAC) were dominant in their regular-season finale, as they won all nine matches and clinched the No. 4 seed in the WAC Tournament starting on April 27 in Arlington, Texas.
GCU started the match with three doubles wins to take the 1-0 advantage. The Lopes picked up 6-2 wins at Court 3 by freshman
Dania Deaifi and sophomore
Valentina Del Marco and the top court by GCU duo
Natasha Puehse and
Santa Strombacha. The Lopes'
Anali Kocevar and
Madeline Lamoreaux wrapped up doubles play with a 7-5 win at Court 2.
Puehse and Strombacha finished the season with a 15-4 record and a 7-1 mark in conference play. The 15 wins tie the GCU Division I-era season record, and it's a career best for the GCU senior and sophomore.
In singles, the Lopes used the momentum and took the first set on five courts. The first three courts to finish for GCU were straight-set wins to clinch the win. Kocevar and Lamoreaux each won 6-3, 6-3 and Deaifi won 6-2, 6-4 at Court 3 to go up 4-0.
With the team win secured GCU wrapped up the match with a trio of three-set wins. Del Marco picked up her fourth WAC win with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win at court six. Meanwhile Puehse and Strombacha each prevailed in 10-point tiebreaker to seal the shutout.
Puehse, Strombacha and Lamoreaux each finished 8-0 in WAC play in singles while ending the regular season on double-digit winning streaks.
The Lopes will enjoy a bye week before the WAC Tournament starts on April 27 in Arlington, Texas.
