GCU to face ASU midweek, host Utah Tech this weekend

The Grand Canyon softball team travels to Tempe to face Arizona State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (Phoenix time) and hosts conference leader Utah Tech in a series-opening doubleheader on Friday and the series finale on Saturday at 1 p.m..

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

GCU is one of eight teams nationally that ranks within the top 20 in batting average and ERA. The Lopes are in the national top 20 in eight categories.
The Lopes lead the WAC in 11 of 18 categories, and only rank outside the top five in one category (hit batters).
Senior right fielder Kristin Fifield ranks third in the nation in RBIs (54), fourth in RBIs per game (1.38) and 10th in total bases (93).

SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE

The Sun Devils rank 40th in the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index this season, while the Lopes sit 86th.
ASU ranks eighth as a team in the national for home runs per game (1.41). Jordan VanHook leads the nation in home runs per game (.44) and is third in home runs (15), while Marissa Schuld holds fourth in saves (five).
The Lopes lost 21-0 in the last meeting at ASU in 2021.

SCOUTING UTAH TECH

Utah Tech swept its WAC series against Abilene Christian and Seattle U and won its series with New Mexico State. The Trailblazers lost to UT Arlington.
The Trailblazers are led offensively by Tanya Windle (.485) and Hannah Hughbanks (33 RBIs), and in the circle by Sauren Garton (2.84 ERA).
GCU is 9-27 against Utah Tech, sweeping a series last March in St. George and losing a series at home last April. The Lopes are 5-4 against the Trailblazers in the teams' Division I eras.

GCU (31-8, 7-5 WAC) proved victorious in Saturday's must-win rubber match against Utah Valley (12-20, WAC 6-6), clinching the Lopes' third WAC series of the season and securing a third-place standing in the WAC with four series to go.
