Western Athletic Conference play will begin this weekend for Grand Canyon baseball as they welcome New Mexico State to Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.Â
All three games will be live streamed on ESPN+.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- WAC OPENING SUCCESS:Â The Lopes historically have been successful in the opening WAC series. Since rejoining the conference in 2014 the Lopes are 5-2-1 in the first WAC series of the season. GCU also owns a 64-26 all-time against New Mexico State with wins in the last three series.
 - STARTERS DEALING: The GCU weekend starting rotation was lights out in a series win over Texas State last weekend. Starters Zach Thornton, Daniel Avitia and Connor Markl combined to allow just five runs across 19 innings with 16 strikeouts. Avitia had the longest outing of his season on March 4 throwing seven innings with jus two runs allowed.
 - BUSH JR. CAREER BEST: Junior center fielder Homer Bush Jr. has been on a tear at the plate the last couple of weeks and he extended his hitting streak to eight games, a career best. Bush Jr. is batting .486 during his hitting streak and he has three hits in three of his last four games.

SCOUTING
New Mexico State enters WAC play with an 0-10 record. The Aggies are hitting just .184 as a team with a 6.65 team ERA. The season started with three losses at home against Bellarmine and the Aggies are 0-3 in neutral site games at the Sugar Land Classic.
Senior infielder Kevin Jimenez leads the team with a .294 average and a .471 slugging percentage. Against Pacific over the weekend Jimenez had five hits in the three-game series. Right hander Hayden Johns has been one of the best relievers for the Aggies this season allowing just one hit in his four appearances.
WHAT'S NEXT?
GCU will host New Mexico for a midweek game on March 14 at 2 p.m. in GCU Ballpark.Â
