An Arizona in-state battle resumes on Tuesday night when the Grand Canyon baseball team faces Arizona in the first of three midweek matchups in 2023. The Lopes are coming off a series win against Texas State, one of eight NCAA Tournament teams on the schedule this year.

The game will be live streamed on ESPN+.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

FIRST MIDWEEK TILT: Due to the postponement of a road game at UNLV, the Lopes will face the Wildcats in their first midweek game this season. Last year the Lopes went 9-4 in midweek games including a 2-1 record against the Wildcats. The road team won all three games last year. GCU took two games at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson while Arizona won 5-3 in the lone meeting at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark on March 29.
SUCCESS AT THE PLATE: Junior center fielder Homer Bush Jr. had himself a series against Texas State over the weekend. Bush Jr. collected eight hits in the three weekend games to raise his batting up to .395. Bush Jr. has now recorded a hit in seven straight games tying his career high. The right-handed outfielder started the weekend with back-to-back three hit games before adding two more hits and two walks in an 11-0 win on Sunday.
BULLPEN ON LOCKDOWN: The GCU bullpen had their best series of the young season against the Bobcats. In the three-game slate seven GCU pitchers combined to allow just one hit, a solo home run in the ninth inning on Saturday, while collecting eight strikeouts with four walks across eight innings. Through 11 games this season the GCU bullpen has allowed only a .269 opponent batting average while striking out 41 batters across 45 and two-thirds innings.

SCOUTING

Arizona is off to an 8-3 start in 2023, with a win over No. 2 Tennessee in their season opener at the MLB Desert Invitational. The Wildcats also defeated Michigan State and UC San Diego in the opening weekend before losing two of three to West Virginia at home. The Wildcats enter Tuesday on a five-game winning streak that features a 16-7 win over fellow WAC opponent California Baptist and a three-game sweep over North Dakota State.

The Wildcats have flashed significant power in 2023, with 47 of the 119 hits going for extra bases so far this year. Arizona currently ranks second in the Pac-12 in doubles (30) and third in slugging percentage (.486).

Junior outfielder Chase Davis was named to the Golden Spikes Preseason Watch List and landed on five different Preseason All-American lists including Perfect Game (second team) and Baseball America (third team). Junior outfielder Max Bingham leads the team with 17 RBIs while senior infielder Nik McClaughry's 16 runs scored are tied for second in the Pac-12. Projected starter sophomore Aidan May has an 6.30 ERA and just one walk allowed in 10 innings of work.

WHAT'S NEXT?

GCU will begin WAC play with a three-game weekend series against New Mexico State at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark on March 10-12.
