The Grand Canyon women's tennis team fell 5-2 to Baylor at GCU Tennis Facility on Saturday night.

The Lopes (4-6) started the match strong by taking the doubles point. Under the lights at home, the Lopes won the final two doubles matches to take a 1-0 dual lead. After Baylor won 6-1 at Court 3, the Lopes answered at Court 2 with graduate
Madeline Lamoreaux and freshman
Anali Kocevar winning 6-4. In the final doubles match at Court 1, senior
Natasha Puehse and junior
Santa Strombacha won 6-4.

Down 1-0,Baylor (8-6) responded early in singles with straight-set wins over Kocevar and sophomore
Valentina Del Marco to take a 2-1 lead. At Court 4, GCU freshman
Dania Deaifi responded from a 6-2 first-set loss by winning  6-4 in the second set before running out of steam in a 6-0 third set to give Baylor a 3-1 lead.

The Lopes responded with Lamoreaux defeating Baylor's Paula Baranano in three sets. The Utah transfer had one her of biggest wins of the season, taking the 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 match to tighten Baylor's team lead to 3-2.

Baylor clinched the dual-match win with a three-set victory over Puehse at Court 2. The GCU senior took the first set 7-6 and nearly won the second but fell 7-5. Baylor's Alina Shcherbinina won the final set 6-0 to put the Bears up 4-2 and clinch the dual win.

It was a similar situation at Court 1, where Strombacha also fell in three sets. The GCU junior lost her first set but responded with a 6-2, second-set win. The final set was competitive and Strombacha lost 6-4 to complete the match.

The Lopes will be back in action at home next Saturday against Air Force.
