EDINBURG, Texas – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team fell to UT Rio Grande Valley 4-3 on Friday morning.
The Lopes (8-7, 2-1 WAC) suffered their first conference loss of the season in a close contest against the Vaqueros (7-6, 2-1 WAC). GCU lost a competitive doubles point and was unable to make up ground in singles, splitting the six matches.
In doubles, the Vaqueros took the 1-0 lead with wins at the top two courts. GCU started doubles with a 6-4 win at Court 3 with freshman

Santa Strombacha 6-4 at Court 1 and GCU duo
Madeline Lamoreaux and
Anali Kocevar 7-5 at No. 2.
Heading into singles, the Lopes quickly rebounded with a 6-1, 6-3 win by Lamoreaux at Court 5 for her eighth win in a row. UTRGV won two of the next three matches to regain the lead at 3-2 with Puehse winning 6-0, 6-4 at the top court.
The dual-match win was clinched by the Vaqueros at Court 3 with a straight-set win over Kocevar. Strombacha finished the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2 for her team-leading 12th singles win of the season.
The Lopes will finish the road trip with a Sunday matinee match at UT Arlington, beginning at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).
