The Grand Canyon track and field team took two of the first Western Athletic Conference athlete of the week honors for the outdoor season.
Marten Gasparini was voted the Men's Field Athlete of the Week, while
Keira Christie-Galloway won the Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
Gasparini took only two throws in his first javelin competition of the year at the Grand Canyon Invitational. The junior from Italy threw 71.99 meters to win the competition. That mark ranks as the best in the conference, the second best in the west region, and the fifth best in the NCAA.
Last season, Gasparini won the WAC men's javelin competition with a throw of 67.74 meters.
Christie-Galloway won the women's 100 meter hurdles with a school record time of 13.34 seconds.
Not only did the Canada native add her name to the outdoor school record books but she broke a record that existed for over ten years.
Christie-Galloway's time was first in the conference, second in the west region, and fourth best in the in the NCAA.
The Lopes will be back in action Friday and Saturday at the Willie Williams Classic at Arizona.
