Grand Canyon and Arizona State open a two-game season series on Wednesday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium with the teams set to complete the series on April 11 at GCU Ballpark. With a long break following a 2010 meeting, this marks the third consecutive season the Lopes and Sun Devils have renewed their crosstown showdown with the teams splitting the two-game series each of the last two seasons.
The game will be live streamed on
Pac-12.com with
GCU audio on GCULopes.com and the GCU Lopes app.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- BACK IN THE TOP 25: This week, GCU returned to D1Baseball.com's top-25 rankings for the first time this season. The Lopes debuted in the poll last year for the first time in program history, spending the final three weeks of the regular season in the No. 25 spot.
- FAMILIAR FACES: As is often the case in pairings among in-state opponents, a couple of familiar faces grace the dugouts of each team. Four-year Lope Jonny Weaver is exhausting his final season of eligibility with the Sun Devils. Weaver made 148 career appearances and racked up 131 hits and 61 RBIs in his four GCU seasons. He has appeared in five games and logged one base hit for Arizona State this season. Wyatt Crenshaw, brother of GCU's junior infielder Dustin Crenshaw, is in his first season on Arizona State's roster.
- WILSON'S RANKS: Lopes junior shortstop Jacob Wilson is living up to the preseason hype. The Thousand Oaks, California, native leads the WAC in batting average and ranks 18th nationally with a .446. He also leads the conference and ranks 21st nationally with 29 RBIs. He leads the WAC and ranks in the nation's top 100 in slugging percentage at .730. Wilson is also tied for fifth nationally with four triples and is the 12th toughest batter to strike out at once every 18.5 at bats.
SCOUTING
Arizona State is off to a 12-8 start in 2023 and just won its first conference series of the season by taking two of three games from Utah in Salt Lake City.
The Sun Devils opened the year with a three-game sweep of San Diego State. They lost a series at Mississippi State and were swept at home by UC Irvine before sweeping UC Davis. Arizona State enters Wednesday's matchup at 3-2 in midweek contests.
Arizona State slots two spots behind GCU in the nation's batting average rankings, sitting at 42nd with a .308 mark. The Sun Devils rank 142nd nationally with a 5.71 team ERA.
WHAT'S NEXT?
A pair of WAC heavyweights meet at GCU Ballpark as the Lopes welcome in Sam Houston. The Lopes are 5-1 in conference play and the Bearkats are 6-0. The three-game set gets underway at 6 p.m. on Friday on ESPN+.
