SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team lost 5-2 to Santa Clara on the road on Saturday.
The Lopes (2-7) dropped the doubles point but picked up a pair of singles wins at courts four and six.
In doubles the Broncos (6-3) took the 1-0 lead with wins over the Lopes at the top two courts. Reigning WAC Doubles Players of the Week
William Alsterback and
Alfred Almasi were the first to finish losing 6-4 at court two. On the top court sophomore
Jonathan Da Silva and freshman
David Wekesa lost 6-3 as Santa Clara clinched the doubles point.
In singles Santa Clara extended their lead quickly with a win over Alsterback at No. 5 but the Lopes answered with a win of their own at court six. Freshman
Mattia Ghedin was lights out at the bottom singles court defeating Santa Clara's Nick Cmager 6-4, 6-2 for his second win of the season.
Trailing 3-1 later in the match after the Broncos picked up a win at No. 1 the Lopes again responded with a win by Rosati. The GCU freshman won 6-4, 6-4 for his second win of the season and his first at the No. 4 position.
The Broncos would win the final two matches at courts two and three to close out the match.
GCU will be back in action next week when they Arizona State in Tempe on Feb. 24
