Grand Canyon finished its 2023, nine-game, fall season on November 1.Â
"Fall has really given us the right opportunities this year," Lopes head coach
Shanon Hays said. "We had a big freshman class come in with some key transfers and it's been good watching them all blend into the new version of GCU softball.
The Lopes opened their fall campaign with Phoenix College on Sept. 7, traveled to Arizona State (Oct. 4), and hosted Arizona Western (Oct. 7), Central Arizona (Oct. 11), ASU (Oct. 18), Embry-Riddle (Oct. 25), UNLV (Oct. 28), and Central Arizona (Nov. 1).Â
"Getting to scrimmage eight times in the fall gets them the work they need to implement what they've been working on and I'm happy with their progress," Hays said.
GCU added 12 new names to its new roster:
Savannah Groshong-Kirk,
Landrie Harris,
Mackenzie Nolan,
Alexis Soto,
Tinley Lucas,
Payton Smith,
Haley Wolsky,
Makaiya Gomez,
Sadie Su'a,
Megan Schumacher,
Alina Satcher, and
Ashley Trierweiler, bringing additional talent and athleticism to an already stacked Lopes squad.Â
"Gomez, Schumacher, Soto and Trierweiler have immediately fit in as experienced pieces of our team and the young ones have looked really good as well," Hays said. "I'm excited to see how it all pans out in the spring. We knew we would have a good looking lineup however, I'm especially pleased with how our pitching has looked. I feel like we've improved every year in that department and MB (
Maribeth Gorsuch) has done a super job developing this staff.
The Lopes excitedly anticipate the spring season, beginning in February.Â
