NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Grand Canyon fell in three sets on Saturday's high-stakes WAC matchup against conference leader Stephen F. Austin and move to second place with a 5-1 WAC record.
GCU graduate setter
Klaire Mitchell (33 assists, 10 digs) notched her seventh double-double this season and reached 4,029 career assists, becoming only the eighth active Division I player to join the 4K club.
"I'm proud of her (Mitchell) as always," Lopes head coach
Tim Nollan said after the Ladyjacks 25-19, 29-27, 25-19 win.
Mitchell entered the match at 3,996, recording her 4,000th assist for a kill by sophomore outside hitter
Anaelena Ramirez to tie the first frame at 10-10.
The Lopes (12-5) built a 16-13 lead on a kill from sophomore middle blocker
Trista Strasser but were unable to hold off 4-0 and 5-0 runs by the Ladyjacks (17-3, 6-0 WAC). GCU senior outside hitter
Ashley Lifgren struck her first kill of the match to trim SFA's lead to 19-18, but GCU did not score again until sophomore outside hitter
Tatum Parrott posted her fourth kill of the set at 24-19. SFA closed out the frame on the next set point with a kill by Ariana Pagan.
Parrott led the Lopes in kills (13) and points (14.5), but 12 blocks by the Ladyjacks impressively held the Phoenix native's artillery to just .179 on the match.
Meanwhile, GCU junior outside hitter
Stella Gkiourda etched her first double-double of the season with 11 kills, a team high of 13 digs and two aces for 13 points.
GCU managed five aces to SFA's three, with sophomore libero
Tatum Thomas recording three of them.
The Lopes forged an early lead in the second set but wound up tied seven times from 16-16 to 27-27, ultimately dropping the set 29-27.
Despite trailing the third frame in its entirety, GCU came within striking distance of SFA with back-to-back kills from Parrott to tighten the deficit to 11-9. Kill by Strasser and Parrott kill kept GCU close at 13-11, but the Ladyjacks posted a 3-0 scoring run to find separation at 16-11 andclinched the match 25-19.
GCU continues WAC competition with a match at UT Rio Grande Valley (11-8, 4-1 WAC) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (Phoenix time).
