PARADISE ISLANDS, Bahamas – The Grand Canyon women's golf team finished the fall season by placing third at the White Sands NCAA Invitational on Sunday, holding onto the spot it held after the tournament's first two days.
GCU shot 36 over par in a three-day outing that saw heavy winds swirling around the Ocean Club Golf Course, a par-72 layout that played at 6,415 yards. The Ocean Club Golf Course is located to the northeast of the capital city Nassau and borders the Atlantic Ocean.
Kansas State captured first place at 20 over, with North Florida earning second at 27 over. The tournament was hosted by Santa Clara, which finished 10 strokes back of GCU in fourth.
"Overall, it was a good end to a historic fall," Lopes head coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "We all had higher goals coming into the tourney but happy with the outcome. I was impressed with their fight and discipline throughout the 30-plus mph winds."
The Lopes shot 11 over Sunday for a team score of 299, matching its Saturday total and three better than its Friday score (302).
Junior
Leighton Shosted finished best for GCU at 5 over par with an even Sunday scorecard. Shosted shot 2 over on the front nine with two birdies and propelled up the leaderboard on the back nine, notching four birdies over five holes (Nos. 13-17) to total six birdies for her round. Her Sunday birdie total was a Lope best for a single round over the weekend. She finished four strokes back of Kansas State's Haley Vargas, who won the individual title at 1 over.
"Leighton had another great event and I'm so happy for her," Giesecke said. "She's really settling in as a great college player, and it's been a blast to watch this season."
GCU senior
Constanza Guerrero was consistently in the top 10 all weekend and finished there, as she tied for eighth at 9 over. While Guerrero did not have any birdies Sunday, she notched 16 pars and two bogeys for a 2-over card in the final round.
Lopes sophomore
Ryan Flynn placed 21st at 12 over with two birdies in her final round. Senior teammate
Becca Tschetter tied for 25th at 14 over, while classmate
Carly Strole finished 33rd at 19 over. The trio combined for three birdies over the final 18 holes. GCU's birdie count of 34 was third best among the 11-team field, with its 159 pars also third best.
GCU's fall was a historic one, with four top-five finishes that included two first-place showings. The two team titles set a new program record for most team wins in a fall campaign. Dating back to February of 2023, GCU concludes the calendar year with nine top-three finishes and four team titles.
"This fall has been very impressive and the best we have had here at GCU," Giesecke said. "Having a record of 55-6 and a couple wins under our belt will push us throughout the offseason, and we are looking forward to the spring."
The Lopes take time off over the winter session and return to competition Feb. 5 in the two-day Beach Invitational in Seal Beach, California.
