Grand Canyon announced its 2023 baseball schedule under first-year head coach
Gregg Wallis, as the Lopes' scheduling carries on its challenging nature.
Coming off back-to-back appearances in the NCAA tournament, the Lopes will face at least six fellow tournament teams. GCU also lined up three Pac-12 opponents, two Big 12 opponents and one Big Ten opponent.
The details for GCU's opening-weekend participation in a multiteam tournament are pending finalization and will be announced at a later date. The Lopes expect to add more NCAA tournament-level competitors when the first weekend of play is announced.
"Overall, really excited about this schedule," Wallis said. "I think it is very challenging with great programs, a lot of NCAA regional opponents and a lot of top-25 opponents. It's going to help prepare us to try to win a conference title and try to prepare us for the WAC Tournament."
Of the six NCAA tournament teams that GCU is set to face, five will come to Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark this season. The Lopes host Oregon State, Arizona, Texas State, Gonzaga and New Mexico State while playing at Texas Tech.
After a four-game opening weekend, the Lopes will play host to Ohio State and Gonzaga in the second weekend of play. GCU then will host Texas State for a three-game series, making the Bobcats the only opponent on the 2023 schedule that the Lopes have never faced.
"Gonzaga has been a top-25 team," Wallis said. "Great year last year and they return some quality arms. It's going to be a great challenge for us. Texas State is a great program from the state of Texas. Another top-25 and regional type of team with a lot of talented players."
In late April, in a pause from WAC play, the Lopes will play at Nevada in a three-team weekend with Long Beach State.
"All those weekends are going to prepare us to go into conference play," Wallis said. "If you look at our nonconference weekends, three of the four weekends are going to be nontraditional. We'll play four-game weekends and we'll be playing multiple opponents. I like that for our preparation for different styles and different arms. Our pitching depth will be challenged competing in those four-game weekends."
The lineup of midweek opponents brings more excitement. GCU renews in-state series with Arizona State (one home, one away) and Arizona (two home, one away). The Lopes will host the Sun Devils on April 11 and host the Wildcats on March 7 and May 2.
"It's a great opportunity for our program to play the in-state competition of Arizona State and Arizona," Wallis said. "Those are exciting midweek games. They make a lot of sense. It's a short bus trip to both really quality programs. It's great for the state and the Phoenix baseball community when we get to play those schools."
The Lopes will also play home midweek games against New Mexico and Oregon State, while playing road midweek games at UNLV, Texas Tech and Baylor.
"Our nonconference midweeks are going to be very high quality with NCAA regional type of teams to face off against," Wallis said.
One of the highlights of GCU's 2022 season was a midweek sweep of No. 4 Texas Tech. The Lopes have won four in a row in the series and head to the Red Raiders' turf on April 18-19.
"We're excited about going to Texas Tech," Wallis said. "They have a great facility in Lubbock and it will be a fun challenge to get on the road and play at a Big 12 power."
The WAC landscape changes in 2023 with the departure of Lamar and addition of UT Arlington. More notably for GCU, the conference will not feature the same divisional structure that it did last season.
GCU will open conference play by hosting New Mexico State and will also welcome Sam Houston, Seattle U, Utah Tech and California Baptist to GCU Ballpark.
The Lopes will play road conference series at Sacramento State, Utah Valley, Abilene Christian, Tarleton and UT Rio Grande Valley.
"We're expanding over to the Texas side, so we'll play the traditional teams from the WAC that we've played every year," Wallis said. "But we also get to go into Texas and face off against Sam Houston, Abilene, Tarleton and UTRGV. I think the crossover this year is going to be great for the conference. There are 13 strong programs battling for eight tournament spots. I think our nonconference schedule is going to prepare us because the WAC schedule is good. The conference is on the rise and it's one that is going to be challenging for us."
The conference tournament returns to Mesa's Hohokam Stadium for the eighth straight time. The format of the tournament changes again and will reward the conference's top four finishers with a first-round bye.
