SEATTLE — Grand Canyon won its first WAC match of the season in four sets against Seattle U on Thursday night.
"I really enjoyed winning our first conference match," Lopes head coach
Tim Nollan said. "We talked all week about how preseason prepared us for this moment and I'm just proud of the team's resilience."
GCU defeated Seattle U 25-18, 16-25, 25-17 and 25-19, hitting over .300 in Sets 3 and 4 for a match average of .247. Graduate outside hitter

The first frame featured six ties up until an 8-8 scoreboard, before the Lopes took the lead and never looked back. GCU held a similar tempo in the third set, taking control at the four-point mark and maintaining authority for the remainder of the match, and dominating Seattle U in the middle. The Lopes went on an eight-point run during Thomas' serve to take control at 20-11.
Seattle U led the fourth set 9-6 before another hot Lopes stretch. GCU scored six consecutive points with Brecka and Parrott each picking up two kills in the stretch. The Redhawks made one last push to cut the Lopes' lead to 20-18, but GCU closed out the match with a 5-1 run that was started by a kill from sophomore middle blocker
Alissa Uhlenhop, who recorded a career-high four kills.
GCU will play again on Saturday at 1 p.m., when it hosts UT Arlington at Antelope Gymnasium.
