Lopes slip to 1-1 in WAC play after 1st week
The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team fell in five sets to UT Arlington, which prevailed 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 14-25, 16-14 on Saturday at Antelope Gymnasium.
GCU (7-6, 1-1 WAC) was led by freshman Tatum Parrott and junior Ashley Lifgren, as the outside hitters each posted 16 kills and 17 points in Saturday afternoon's match.
Lopes sophomore middle blocker Alissa Uhlenhop had quite the day as well, leading the team in blocks (2) and hitting .438 to record a career high of nine kills. GCU middle blocker Hannah Eskes matched a career high with 13 kills and even senior setter Klaire Mitchell got in on the offensive action, recording three kills to go with her team lead in digs (16) and assists (47).
Although the Mavericks (9-4, 1-0 WAC) took the first frame, the Lopes bounced back in the second set, with 17 kills and three aces from junior setter Ava Mason.
GCU found its back against the wall when UT Arlington stole the third set, but created momentum in the fourth, hitting .324 for 16 kills and going on three five-point scoring runs to hold the Mavericks to a score of 14.
With 10 ties throughout the fifth frame, it seemed like anybody's game, especially at 14-14. But the Lopes were edged out 16-14 for the Mavericks to win their seventh consecutive match.
"Today's loss was a tough one," Lopes head coach Tim Nollan said. "We look to regroup and continue next week."
The Lopes host California Baptist on Saturday in GCU Arena.
