After a five-year career in a Grand Canyon uniform, right-handed pitcher
Nick Hull was the first Lopes player selected in the 2022 MLB Draft. Hull went in the seventh round and 203rd overall to the Chicago Cubs.
"I don't think it has quite set in yet," Hull said. "It's one of those things where, when I start to go down there and sign a contract and shake some important hands, I think it will start to set in for me then. My lifelong goal has finally come to fruition."
GCU has had a player selected in nine straight drafts.
"I'm so proud of Nick," Lopes head coach
Gregg Wallis said. "He's worked so hard to get to this point. He came back for his grad year on a mission to help us get to a regional and get selected by an MLB organization. I couldn't be happier that he accomplished both of those goals."
Hull is the eighth highest drafted pitcher in Lopes history and third highest in the last 25 years behind only Jake Wong (80th overall in 2018) and Kade Mechals (112th overall in 2020).
Hull's Lopes career spanned five seasons. As a freshman and a sophomore, he mostly appeared in relief but also started nine games. As a junior and senior in 2020 and 2021, Hull was one of GCU's top bullpen options. In 2021, he was GCU's first pitcher to post a sub-2.00 ERA with 30+ innings of work since 1982.
Taking advantage of the COVID waiver to play a fifth season in 2022, Hull started games at the front of the Lopes rotation. He accumulated 96 2/3 innings of work with a 7-1 record, 3.72 ERA and 102 strikeouts.
"Some things happen, and I'm glad those things happened for a reason," Hull said. "I feel like I'm more prepared now to play professional baseball than I was a few years ago."
His work at the front of GCU's weekend rotation helped the Lopes to a 41-21 overall record and an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. Hull spun 6 1/3 innings of one-run baseball against Missouri State, striking out 10 and exiting with a lead.
"I had three pitching coaches in my time at GCU," Hull said. "I'm thankful for each one of them because they've provided me with something special that has gotten me to this point."
The MLB Draft concludes on Tuesday with the 11th through 20th rounds beginning at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).
