The Grand Canyon women's tennis team wrapped up the weekend with a 4-2 loss to Colorado State on Sunday morning at the GCU Tennis Facility.
GCU (2-4) fell down early dropping the doubles point but countered with straight set singles wins at the top courts before Colorado State (4-2) clinched the match.
The Lopes dropped the doubles point with losses at the bottom two courts. At court two, fifth-year duo
Autum Prudhomme and
Fabienne Schmidt battled in a 6-2 loss while freshman pair
Sara Rakim and
Valentina Del Marco lost their match 6-3 at No. 3. With the doubles point secured for Colorado State, junior
Natasha Puehse and sophomore
Santa Strombacha had their match left unfinished at No. 1 trailing 4-3.
In singles the Lopes bounced back and took the top two courts in straight sets. Puehse was dominant at No. 1 winning 6-2, 6-0 while Schmidt at court two won her first set 6-2 and then had to battle back down 3-4 eventually winning the set 7-5.
Colorado State countered with straight set wins at Nos. 4 and 6 to lead 3-2 with two matches left.
At court three Strombacha was down 1-4 early in her first set but fought back to push it to a tiebreaker. Colorado State's Radka Buzkova was able to close out the tiebreaker 7-4 and won the second set 6-2 to clinch the dual match win for the Rams. GCU's
Jana Weiss at court five had her match unfinished in the second set.
The Lopes will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on Illinois State in a neutral-site match in Las Vegas.
