RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Grand Canyon finished off a sweep to open conference play, defeating California Baptist 19-3 on Sunday to conclude the battle of reigning WAC regular-season champions. GCU exploded for 19 runs on 20 hits to induce a mercy-rule victory and record its fifth straight win.
The Lopes (7-4, 3-0 WAC) tallied 20 hits for the first time in a WAC game since May 3, 2015, vs. Seattle U (22 hits). They scored 19 runs to match their most in a WAC game since returning to Division I in 2014. For the series, GCU outscored the Lancers (7-3, 0-3 WAC) by a final tally of 32-7.
Every GCU batter — including three pinch-hitters — reached base in the offensive display. Sophomore center fielder
Homer Bush Jr. recorded the first five-hit game by a GCU batter this season, going 5 for 6 with a double, four runs scored and two RBIs.

After homering in only two of the season's first six games, the Lopes have hit at least one home run in five consecutive games — all wins. On Sunday, it was
Jacob Wilson and Aguilar teaming up for GCU's first back-to-back home runs of the season.

Connor Markl picked up his third win in as many apperaances or the Lopes. The sophomore lefty threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs while striking out seven and walking only one.
GCU opened conference play with a series sweep for the first time since 2018 and the Lancers took their first conference series sweep as a Division I program.
The Lopes scored 11 runs in the first three innings to put things out of reach early.
GCU posted matching four-run tallies in the first and second innings.
Tyler Wilson had the big hit of the opening frame, singling through the right side to push two across with two outs.
Jacob Wilson provided the second-inning punch with a three-run home run to left before Aguilar followed with a solo shot.
The Lopes scored three more in the third to push their lead to 9-0. Bush doubled in a run, and Aguilar picked up two more RBIs with a two-out single up the middle.
GCU scored two more runs on three more hits in the fifth, and ended the day with a six-run outburst in the seventh. Ten consecutive Lopes reached to begin the seventh, as the Lopes put the game in mercy-rule territory.
Just 11 games into the season, the Lopes already have logged three performances of 15 or more runs for the first time since 2015.
Jacob Wilson has homered four times in the last five games and picked up 11 RBIs.
Next up, GCU will play seven nonconference games before returning to conference play on March 18. The Lopes return home from their extended road trip for five home games this week, hosting Cal State Northridge on Tuesday and Wednesday before welcoming San Diego for a three-game weekend.
