The Grand Canyon women's tennis team dropped their home opener to Tarleton 4-2 on Friday afternoon.
Â
Before the match the Lopes honored the 2021 WAC regular season and tournament titles with a ring ceremony honoring the four returners from last year's squad.
Â
The Lopes (2-3) used the home energy with a full house at the GCU Tennis Facility to take the doubles point but Tarleton responded with four wins in singles to clinch the team win.
Â
In doubles the Lopes took the 1-0 lead with wins at the top two courts. Junior
Natasha Puehse and sophomore
Santa Strombacha won 6-2 at No. 1 but Tarleton countered with a 6-4 win at court three over GCU freshman duo
Valentina Del Marco and
Sara Rakim. The Lopes would win in the final court with fifth-year pair
Autum Prudhomme and
Fabienne Schmidt jumping out to a 3-0 lead eventually winning 6-3.
Â
Tarleton (9-3) regrouped and won five first sets parlaying those into straight set wins on four courts. Schmidt lost 6-0, 6-3 at court two while Prudhomme fell 6-3, 6-2 at court four as Tarleton regained the lead 2-1.
Â
The Texans would go on to clinch the dual-match win with straight set wins at courts five and three. Despite the outcome determined the Lopes continued to battle on the final two courts. Del Marco after dropping her first set rebounded two wins in the final sets 6-1, 6-2.
Â
Puehse also battled to the final point after falling behind 0-4 in the third set. The GCU junior had won two games in a row before rain and wind escalated and the match was ultimately left unfinished due to the wet courts.
Â
The Lopes will be back in action on Sunday morning against Colorado State at 9 a.m.
