Gianni, Janke combine for 30 kills at Pauley
LOS ANGELES – The No. 8 Grand Canyon men's volleyball team lost 3-0 on Thursday night in the first of two matches at No. 1 UCLA.
In a battle of the top two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams at Pauley Pavilion, the Lopes (9-7, 3-2 MPSF) hit a season-low .172 and were limited in their attacking chances as the Bruins (11-2, 3-0 MPSF) recorded a season-high 16 blocks.
GCU outside hitters Camden Gianni and Christian Janke were effective, collecting 30 of the team's 38 kills in the first 3-0 loss for the Lopes since Jan. 15 at Penn State.
The Lopes struggled to find the offensive rhythm in the first set, collecting eight kills and eight errors in a 25-14 loss. Janke collected a set-high five kills while Gianni and redshirt freshman setter Nicholas Slight were the other two Lopes to tally a kill. UCLA had a well-balanced attack as five players combined for their nine kills in the set.
Gianni came alive in the second set, collecting seven kills on .417 hitting as the Lopes lost 25-19. GCU managed to hit a match-high .258 in the set as redshirt junior opposite Hugo Fischer had five kills, but UCLA was able to pull away with a 3-0 run late in the set to give them match point at 24-17.
Gianni, a redshirt sophomore, collected his final seven kills in the third set to cap off a 17-kill performance as UCLA completed the sweep with a 25-21 set. Fischer put in his best performance of the night, tallying six kills on seven attempts.
Tied at 9-9, the Bruins went on a 4-1 run to regain the lead and never gave it up. The Lopes pulled back within two, 15-13, off a Fischer kill, but UCLA finished strong and scored the final three points of the match on blocks.
The Lopes and Bruins will meet again Friday at 6 p.m. (Phoenix time) in Pauley Pavilion.
