SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Grand Canyon had its five-game win streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to Sacramento State at John Smith Field on Friday night. The Lopes lost for the first time in conference play.
The Lopes (14-9, 6-1 WAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and did not trail until the bottom of the ninth where the Hornets (11-10, 3-4 WAC) plated two runs to walk off with a victory.
GCU's fourth-inning run came on a solo home run from senior third baseman
Juan Colato. It was Colato's second homer of the season, a laser off a 2-2 count that cleared the right field fence in a hurry.
The Lopes added a run to their lead in the seventh. Sophomore left fielder
Cade Verdusco — who was returning from a three-week absence due to injury — was hit by a pitch and advanced to third base on a stolen base and a ground out. Sophomore center fielder
Homer Bush Jr. beat out an infield single with two outs to score Verdusco and put GCU ahead 2-0.
GCU had successfully worked around free passes all night, but it finally caught up to the Lopes in the late innings. The Lopes walked three batters in the eighth inning — including one with the bases loaded — to yield Sacramento State's first run of the evening. The ninth inning got messy quickly with two hits and two walks. A bases-loaded sacrifice fly tied the game and recorded the first out of the frame, while a single to right with a runner on second gave the Hornets the victory.
The Lopes were held to seven hits with three coming from Bush and two from Colato. Colato and sophomore first baseman
Elijah Buries each extended their reach-based streak to 16 games.
GCU fifth-year righty
Nick Hull was impressive on the mound. He worked around trouble successfully after allowing five hits and three walks. Hull recorded seven strikeouts and did not allow a run in six innings of work. He exited with a 2-0 lead that the bullpen did not hold.
The Lopes will look to bounce back on Saturday when reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week
Daniel Avitia climbs the hill for a 4 p.m. start.
