IRVINE, Calif. — The Grand Canyon baseball team scored its first two runs in the seventh inning to grab a 2-1 lead, but the Lopes couldn't hang on, allowing three late runs in a 4-2 loss at UC Irvine on Saturday night.
The Lopes (2-4) outhit the Anteaters (4-2) 9-6 and drew four walks compared to just one for UCI, but GCU left 12 runners on base.

Jacob Wilson reached on a single, a single and a walk, respectively, to load the bases. Sophomore infielder

Tyler Wilson each drew bases-loaded walks to tie and take the lead.
The Anteaters immediately countered with two runs in the seventh and widened their lead with one more in the eighth. UC Irvine used back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt to place runners on second and third with one out. The Anteaters tied the game with a ground out to third base and took the lead on a passed ball.
UC Irvine strung together three hits in the eighth to net one run and reach the final margin of 4-2.
GCU put a runner on second in the eighth on a
Cade Verdusco with just one out but could not push him across. Crenshaw tripled in the ninth with one out but was stranded.
The Lopes used just two pitchers on the night, with sophomore
Carter Young turning in 5 1/3 innings of one-hit baseball with three strikeouts and one walk.
Sophomore first baseman
Elijah Buries tallied three more hits, upping his batting average to .531. It was the third straight games of at least three hits for the reigning Freshman All-American. Sophomore outfielder
Homer Bush Jr. joined Buries in the multi-hit category for the second straight game.
GCU will look to salvage one game in the three-game series at UC Irvine when the teams play at 2 p.m. (Phoenix time) on Sunday.
