ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team lost a 5-2 road match to New Mexico on Friday.
The Lopes (2-2) took the doubles point for a 1-0 lead, but New Mexico (6-1) responded with five singles wins to complete the comeback.
In doubles, GCU secured wins at Courts 2 and 3.
Autum Prudhomme and
Fabienne Schmidt won 6-2 at No. 2 for their third straight win while
Jana Weiss and
Valentina Del Marco won 6-3 at No. 3.
Natasha Puehse and Santa Srombacha battled in a tough 6-4 loss at the top court.
In singles, Puehse provided the lone GCU win at No. 1, battling New Mexico's Yue Lin Chin in a 6-1, 7-6 win. It was the second win on the season for the GCU junior, giving her the second most on the team.
New Mexico controlled the rest of the singles matches, taking four of the final five courts in straight sets. Schmidt fought hard at Court 2 in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 loss while Strombacha went to a second-set tiebreaker, falling 6-2, 7-6.
The Lopes will be back in action in two weeks for the home and WAC conference opener against Tarleton on March 4.
