EDINBURG, Texas – The Grand Canyon men's soccer team fell 3-1 at UT Rio Grande Valley in a windy conference matchup Sunday afternoon.
GCU dropped its second conference match of the season and moves to 5-6-3 overall and 2-2-2 in WAC play. The Vaqueros (5-7-3, 3-4-1 WAC) moved past the Lopes in the standings, putting GCU in sixth with the top six teams advancing to the WAC Tournament in three weeks.
UTRGV took a 1-0 lead in the third minute of play. The Lopes were held without a shot until the 13th minute, when freshman forward
Bright Nutornutsi created space and put a shot on goal from 8 yards out. Nutornutsi's shot was saved and gathered by senior forward
Shaun Joash, who put it into the net for the equalizer.
The goal was Joash's eighth of the season and third in his last two games. Joash enters the final three regular-season matches with 21 points, 12 of which have come in conference play.
The Vaqueros took the lead in the 52nd minute and added their third goal 29 seconds later to lead 3-1. GCU, who had one corner kick in the first half, tallied seven in the second half along with seven shots but could not find the back of the net.
GCU completes its regular-season road schedule on Friday at Seattle U before returning home for Sunday, Oct. 30, contest vs. San Jose State at 1 p.m. in GCU Stadium.
