The No. 20 Grand Canyon men's soccer team is on the road this weekend for its first away WAC matches of the season. First, the Lopes play at Houston Baptist on Friday, then travel to play at Chicago State on Sunday. Friday's game will not be live-streamed.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- LOPES IN THE POLLS: GCU checked in at No. 20 in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll, No. 17 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll and No. 23 in the College Soccer News poll.
- AFONSO STEPS UP: GCU fifth-year midfielder Marco Afonso has stepped up in his last season, earning career highs in goals (four) and goals in a game (two). Afonso's four goals this season has tied his goals scored for the previous four seasons combined.
- THREE CONSECUTIVE HONORS: The Lopes have won a WAC Player of the Week honor the last three weeks in a row. Senior defender Esai Easley won on Sept. 13, Afonso won Sept. 20 and freshman goalkeeper Rafael Guerrero won on Sept. 27.
SCOUTING
Houston Baptist (2-6, 0-1)
- Houston Baptist is 2-6 on the season, with its two wins coming against St. Thomas (Minn.) and Huston-Tillotson.Â
- C.J. Smith leads the Huskies with five goals, which ranks third in the WAC.
- Head coach Ryan Pratt is in his fifth season as Houston Baptist's head coach and has collected an overall record of 19-44-5.
Chicago State (2-5-2, 0-1)
- Chicago State started its men's soccer program during the 2020 season before canceling because of COVID-19. The Cougars are now in their first full Division I season and debuted their WAC slate with a 2-0 loss against UT Rio Grande Valley.
- The Cougars started the season with a 2-1 win over Northwestern and has also defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay.Â
- Chicago State played four consecutive overtime matches from Sept. 3 to Sept. 10, including one-goal losses against Xavier and Michigan.
- Enrique Zamora leads the Cougars with three goals and six points.
- Goalkeeper Joe Bowles leads the conference with 37 total saves.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Lopes moved to 6-1 and 1-0 in WAC play after a 1-0 win against Seattle U at GCU Stadium on Saturday.
- Guerrero had a career tying eight saves and earned his third shutout in the past four games.
- Sophomore midfielder Georg Bjarnason scored his first career goal with a header off a corner kick by fifth-year midfielder Justin Rasmussen to secure the win for the Lopes.
- GCU's Guerrero was injured in an on-field collision that concluded the GCU-Seattle U match. Read more here.
