SEATTLE — The Grand Canyon men's soccer team dropped its first road match of the season Friday night, falling 2-0 at No. 5 Washington.
"It was a hard-fought game against a very good opponent and I thought we created some very good chances to win the game," GCU head coach
Leonard Griffin said. "I'm confident the result will alow us to learn, grow and become a better team."
In a rematch of the Lopes' NCAA tournament first-round loss in the spring, the first half was a physical battle and consisted of several opportunities from both sides. Neither the Lopes or Huskies could convert the chances to remain knotted at 0-0 for halftime.
GCU freshman goalkeeper
Rafael Guerrero made four saves on the night, including an unbelievable dive in the first half to keep the Huskies off the board.
The Huskies outshot the Lopes 16-7, with 12 of the shots coming in the second half.
Washington's Lucas Meek, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week, scored both goals to give the Huskies their third consecutive win and second shutout.
Up next, the Lopes head to Corvallis, Oregon, to close out the three-day weekend with a Monday match at No. 22 Oregon State.
