Grand Canyon settled for a split of the 2021 WAC regular-season title after falling to California Baptist 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at GCU Ballpark.
Neck and neck in the standings throughout the WAC season, the league-leading Lopes and Lancers split the four-game set to end the regular season. Both teams ended conference play with a 29-7 mark.
GCU (36-19-1) won two of the first three games in the weekend series to clinch its fifth WAC title. The Lopes enter next week's WAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. Not only is California Baptist (37-15) ineligible for postseason play due to its status as a transitioning school, the Lopes would have held the No. 1 seed regardless by virtue of their series win at third-place Sacramento State this year.
The Lopes jumped in front 1-0 in the first inning but were shut out for the remainder of Saturday's contest. An error and a walk began the afternoon, and an infield single by freshman first baseman
Elijah Buries put the Lopes in front.
California Baptist took a third-inning lead after its first three batters reached on a pair of singles and a walk, prompting GCU to turn to its bullpen early. Sophomore right-hander
Vince Reilly diffused the threat, but the Lancers used two productive outs to score runs.
A Lopes error extended CBU's fourth inning and the Lancers plated a pair of unearned runs to extend their lead to 4-1. A fifth-inning solo home run added to the lead, as did a two-out infield single in the eighth inning.
GCU had leadoff singles in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but could not convert the leadoff runners into runs. The Lopes did not have consecutive batters reach base successfully after the first two batters of the game. GCU was 4 of 18 (.222) on advancement opportunities while CBU went 11 for 19 (.579).
The two club's starting pitchers combined to work 2 1/3 innings as both sides handed the game over to the bullpen early on.
The Lopes will open their participation in the WAC Tournament at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Mesa's Hohokam Stadium. No. 1-seeded GCU will await the lowest-seeded team to advance from Wednesday's first round, a pool of candidates that includes No. 4 New Mexico State, No. 5 Seattle U and No. 6 Utah Valley. The Lopes combined to go 11-1 against that group of teams in conference play.
