CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team made a big move to finish in ninth place Tuesday at the 23-team Cowboy Classic, hosted by Wyoming at Whirlwind Golf Club.
GCU senior
Trevor Lampson moved up 26 spots to finish in a tie for 14th place. Lampson finished with a bogey-free round of 66 (6 under par). His 211 tournament total was a team best.
With a score of 860 (4 under par), the Lopes finished one shot behind Oregon and ahead of tournament host Wyoming, UNLV and UCLA.
GCU seniors
Adam Veenstra (70) and
Michael Salazar (71) fired under-par rounds in their final trip around Whirlwind.
In addition to Lampson's 211, other Lopes scores included senior
Marcus Sundlof's 217, Veenstra's 219, junior
Matthew Polivka's 219 and Salazar's 220.
GCU recorded a tournament-high three eagles in the 54-hole event.
The Lopes are back in action on Apr. 17-18 at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.

GCU ended the tournament's first day in the middle of the 23-team field, which includes five Mountain West teams and four Pac-12 programs. The event's highest ranked teams are No. 28 San Diego State and No. 36 Stanford. When play was suspended, San Diego State held a 14-shot lead over Colorado.
Other Lopes scores included Polivka's 144, followed by the senior trio of Lampson (145), Veenstra (149) and Salazar (149).
GCU recorded 30 birdies on Monday, led by Sundlof's eight birdies.
