FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a 4-0 loss to Northern Arizona on Friday.
The Lopes (10-8) dropped the doubles point for the first time in nine matches and the Lumberjacks (12-4) clinched the match with three singles wins at the bottom half of the lineup.
In doubles, NAU took the point with a pair of 6-2 wins at Courts 1 and 3.
Natasha Puehse and
Jana Weiss fell at No. 1 while
Joely Lomas and
Taylor Andersen lost at No. 3 for the first time in nine matches. Senior duo
Emilia Occhipinti and
Autum Prudhomme extended their winning streak to 11 matches with a 7-6 (9-7) win in a tiebreaker at No. 2.
In singles, NAU took the early advantage with first-set wins on Courts 5 and 6. Weiss was scratched from the singles lineup at No. 3 so the Lopes reshuffled their lineups on the lower courts. Prudhomme fell in straight sets at No. 4 while Lomas was moved up to Court 3 and retired in the third set, trailing 4-0 after winning the second set 6-2. The match was clinched with a 7-5, 6-2 Lumberjack win over GCU's
Aline Buhr at No. 6.
Puehse had her match left unfinished with the GCU sophomore heading to a third set after taking the second set 6-4. Meanwhile at Cour 2, Occhipinti was on the brink of a straight-set win but her match was stopped with her leading 6-2, 4-1.
The Lopes will now head to next week's WAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Lopes earned a first-round bye and will play the winner of No. 4 seed Chicago State vs. No. 5 Seattle U on May 1 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
