The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team returned home to celebrate Senior Night with a 25-21, 25-12, 25-14 victory against Seattle U on Monday night in GCU Arena.
"I am really happy for our seniors," GCU head coach
Tim Nollan said. "It is always really nice to get a win on Senior Night. To come out and do it in three sets in a little bit different look than we have been in the past, I am super proud of them."
An opening ace by GCU freshman setter
Ava Mason was followed by back-to-back kills from senior outside hitter
Yeny Murillo and sophomore middle blocker
Hannah Eskes. With the score tied at 12, the Lopes went on a seven-point run highlighted by senior middle blocker
Kaira Moss' two kills and vice ace by Eskes. Seattle U closed the Lopes' lead to 23-17 before Moss recorded another kill to set up the set-cinching point.
"
Kaira Moss, what a great performance she had," Nollan said. "Eleven kills on 16 attempts with no errors, that's impressive."
The Lopes (9-2) started the second set with a three-point run featuring kills by Murllo and senior opposite hitter
Sarah Hagge. GCU pulled away to a 21-11 lead with a four-point run that was started by a Moss kill. Freshman defensive specialist
Mia Goulart followed with an ace before another Moss kill and freshman outside hitter
Giorgia Turri getting involved in the scoring. The Redhawks grabbed one more point before the Lopes closed out the set with four straight points.
"It was really a group effort tonight," Nollan said. "
K.J. Adams with 13 digs and just really good first ball contact allowing our offense to run smoothly.
Sarah Hagge setting up the block on the right side and also hitting .300. I am just really, really proud."
The final set started out similar to the first, except this time it was junior middle blocker
Annabelle Kubinski who recorded an ace and served the Lopes to the next six points. In the middle of the third set, Kubinski added two more aces to give the Lopes a 17-10 lead. The match was closed out by a six-point GCU run that was highlighted by a kill and an ace from Murillo.
"Yeny just doing what Yeny does in giving us big swings in big moments," Nollan said. "We could not ask for anything more from our senior."
GCU, which is in second place in the WAC, will be back in action at 3 p.m. Tuesday as it hosts Seattle U in its final home match of the season.
