SEATTLE – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team lost 4-2 at Seattle U on Thursday night in the first of a two-match visit to the Redhawks.
Seattle U (6-2-1, 5-0-1 WAC) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first 26 minutes, putting GCU (1-7, 1-3 WAC) in a hole that was too deep to escape.
The Redhawks were led offensively by their leading goal scorer, Sydney Carr, who recorded an early hat trick with goals in the fourth, sixth and 20th minutes. Seattle U, now in first place in the WAC, added another goal in the 26th minute on a solo goal by Ava Benedetti.
Lopes head coach
Chris Cissell turned to his bench in the 30th minute, giving
Jordan Ferguson a chance in goal and subbing in eight new position players.
That new wave of chemistry paid off in the 41st minute, as build-up play from freshman midfielder
Reese Mendenhall found fellow freshmen
Brenna Alderson at the edge of the penalty box and Alderson finished it off with a with a goal in the top right corner.
It was the first collegiate goal for the Gilbert, Arizona, native who came to GCU after setting Perry High School's career scoring mark with 53 goals.
With most of the bench players still in the game, the Lopes continued to apply pressure offensively and outshot Seattle U 5-4 in the second half.
That pressure led to a long-distance goal in the 71st minute by midfielder
Jaycee Iranshad, who took a shot that crossed in front of the goal and found the top left corner after it deflected off the Redhawk goalkeeper's hand. It was Iranshad's second goal of the season with defender
Anna Whitaker earning her first assist.
Alderson and GCU senior
Camryn Larson led the team in shots with two apiece while five other Lopes took one shot each. In her 60 minutes off the bench, Ferguson made three saves without allowing a goal.
The Lopes and Redhawks will meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m. (Phoenix time). The game will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network.
