SEATTLE – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team wrapped up the road trip with a 2-1 win at Seattle U on Saturday.
The Lopes (2-7, 2-3 WAC) snapped a seven-match unbeaten streak by the Redhawks (6-3-1, 5-1-1 WAC) and handed them their first loss in WAC play since Oct. 24, 2019.
"I am extremely proud of the entire soccer family and it was a complete team effort," GCU head coach
Chris Cissell said. "We were very gritty and we played with passion, determination, commitment and heart. I am very proud of our team because we beat a great team and our defending conference champions on the road."
The Lopes scored two goals in the first half, one off a free kick from junior midfielder
Marleen Schimmer in the 26th minute and the other from
Camryn Larson 10 minutes later on a volley shot after passes from
Perri Belzer and
Jaycee Iranshad found her in front of the goal.
After a hand ball was called on the Redhawks, Schimmer took the free kick just outside the penalty box and slotted her shot past the goalie into the bottom right corner. It is the second time this season that Schimmer has scored outside the flow of play, also making the game-winning penalty kick against Utah Valley on Feb. 20.
On Larson's goal, Belzer found Iranshad for a header that went to Larson on the back side of the goal. The senior redirected the ball in mid-air with her left foot for her 12th career goal, which moves her into fourth place on the GCU Division I career scoring leader list.
With the 2-0 lead in hand, the Lopes had to fend off a very aggressive Seattle U offense that outshot the Lopes 12-2. Freshman goalie
Jordan Ferguson, in her first start, made six saves for GCU with four coming in the second half.
Seattle U broke through in the 83rd minute on a goal by Leahi Manthei and had a chance to tie with 30 seconds left but Ferguson stopped the shot in the middle of the goal.
With 19 seconds left, the Lopes went down to 10 players after midfielder
Haley Bostard received her second yellow card and was sent off. The Lopes defended well and didn't allow Seattle U to get a shot on goal.
The Lopes will be back at home next week for two games against UT Rio Grande Valley on March 18 and 20.
